Responsibility

The MISD Elementary Counseling topic for the month of October is responsibility. Responsibility can be addressed in a variety of ways from acting responsibility, taking responsibility for your actions, or being responsible on a more global scale. In the younger grade levels, students are taught the basic meaning of responsibility. The second grade classes read Horton Hatches an Egg. We discussed all the responsible traits Horton displayed by remaining with the egg, unlike the other charter in the book who left her egg and was irresponsible.

In forth grade we discussed responsibility on a more global scale. In the book, The Lorax, the Onceler did not take responsibility for his environment and damaged his surroundings and caused pain for the residents. We talked about why it is important to take responsibility for our homes, schools, community and the Earth. We brainstormed ways to take care of the things we do have and how to make them last longer.

You can continue the conversation at home by talking with your student about your responsibilities at home. What are the natural consequences when someone is irresponsible? What are the benefits of acting responsible at your home?
