Respect

Last week we discussed respect during classroom guidance. Each grade level discussed respect through a different book, lesson or perspective. The three main areas of respect we covered in class were to treat others as you would want to be treated, take care of property and treat yourself with kindness.

In third grade we focused on respecting ourselves by reading one of my new favorite books, Zero by Kathryn Othoshi.

In the book, Zero struggles with finding her place and value in the world. She has difficulty seeing how she counts because the is not like the other numbers. In the end, she learns to respect herself and discovers that she really does have value. What a fabulous book full of math puns and a valuable lesson about self respect!

Don't forget to check your student's take home folder/binder to see exactly how he or she learned about respect. I always send home an activity the students did with me in class and a letter to the parents on the back.
